The rhyton is shaped like a stag's head with large branching horns. At the base of the handle is a female head in relief, and at the top the handle itself ends in the shape of a lion with its front paws on the mouth of the horn. Two mythological scenes are depicted on the horns: Theseus, with his chlamys unfurled, felled the Marathon bull, who ravages Attica, and Heracles in his lion's skin has captured the Cerinean doe of Artemis.
The deer is a symbol of longevity, nobility and kindness. It was these qualities that the ancient Thracians wished for their guests, while they ritually drank from the vessels.
The golden ritual service includes a phial (dish) and eight rhytons (cups) with different zoomorphic and anthropomorphic forms. It is considered, that during the ritual feasts the warriors who merited the battle sat in a circle and handed each other the phials and rhytons filled with wine. It is considered, that the amphora was used in the "twinning" ritual. The treasure belonged to an as yet unknown Thracian ruler of the Odrisi tribe, ruled at the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd century BC.
